Work

We are generally defined by this thing called work. Whether this is a career or a job or even a decision not to work.

For some it gives meaning to an otherwise meaningless life.

Its usually the first thing asked when meeting someone - unless you're a guy and then its a contest for "What kind of car do you drive?"

Sometimes it shows what sorto of species we are. Inverterbrates who allow our parents, family, friends or lover choose our career. For some remain spineless jellyfish by not following their own path even later. No matter how miserable other people's choices made us.

Wait, you can't get out of it that easily. It was a choice after all to leave the choice in someone else's hands.

I also place all those who just let life take them and hate their jobs and want more out of life in this inverterbrate classification. Don't worry though, I believe in you, and know you can do anything you want to.

Ever wanted to pursue writing or art? Take a workshop at a local college. Perhaps consider combining it with counseling. That way you can do what you love for a living. Or look into housesitting. You can take some time off to see if you really do have the writer or artist in you. It does take some discipline. Try http://www.caretaker.org/ . If you get a subscription - let them know I sent you! Maybe next years subscription for me will be free if enough of you sign up! There are jobs for individuals, families - even couples.

Like to give massages - want to live anywhere you'd like around the world? Or want your own business? Want to wear what you want? Look into a Massage Therapy school - if you didn't make that much last year - you could qualify for a government grant - and a loan. These loans don't look at your credit history either. So don't worry if you have less then perfect credi history - or if you don't have any credit history.

There are even schools like the Heartwood Institute in Ca that offer work/study programs - so you can live and work and learn in a gorgeous environment.

Ever been on vacation and wish you could've stayed longer? Many resorts are willing to barter - just ask - work a week - stay a week. Or you could apply for longer positions. Willing to cook? Answer phones? Maybe clean toilets - in exchange for living in an absolutely beautiful locale? Call up a few resorts. Hot springs, beach, ski - the skys the limit. When you send in a resume - or a letter of interest - make sure you include an ability to be in a secluded place (not a few minutes drive to any manjor city!) for long periods.

Want to find out about a particular career choice? Call a company and request an informational interview. Want to visit foreign lands? Get TESOL certified and teach english in Japan, Thailand, India etc. Do your research though, try to get placement thru the accredited school you go thru - people are taken advantage of. However, done right, it can be an experience that will effect you for a lifetime!

I'm getting TESOL certified this year.

I most admire the visionary with the resolve, power - backbone - to realize their dreams. So look at yourself and your life honestly. Are you happy? There's no reason you can't be. Go out and define work for yourself - become the person you want be.

The Visionary's power after all is making the possible concrete.
